Stains
How to Get Sweat Stains Out of a Hat
White salt rings on dark caps and yellow staining on lighter caps are usually the visible result of repeated sweat, skin oil and product buildup.
The earlier you treat them, the easier they generally are to manage.
What you'll need
- Cool water
- Mild fabric-compatible detergent
- Soft cloth or soft brush
- Appropriate stain treatment
- Clean towel
- Shape support for drying
1. Check the material
Never assume the same cleaning process is safe for every cap.
2. Spot-test
Test detergent or stain treatment in an inconspicuous area first.
3. Treat the sweatband
This is usually where the highest concentration of sweat and oil accumulates.
Work gently rather than aggressively scrubbing the fabric.
4. Treat the visible ring
Apply your chosen fabric-safe treatment according to its directions.
Allow appropriate dwell time without letting harsh cleaners dry unnecessarily onto the cap.
5. Wash appropriately
If the cap is machine-washable, use a shape-support system to help protect its structure.
Otherwise, hand-clean according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
6. Air-dry with support
Reshape before drying and keep the cap supported until completely dry.
